LIN Fanglu (b.1989) lives and works in Shanghai, China. She received her BFA (2012) and MFA (2016) in Artistic Design from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing.
LIN’s practice engages with the material culture and craft traditions of ethnic minority communities in China. Her research focuses in particular on the nearly lost tie-dye techniques of Bai women in Yunnan, as well as the Dong textile practice known as Liangbu in Guizhou. Through sustained fieldwork, she has worked in close collaboration with local female artisans, developing a distinct body of fiber-based work rooted in these inherited techniques.
In recent years, LIN’s work has been exhibited at major institutions including Victoria and Albert Museum (London, 2025), Michelangelo Foundation (Venice, 2024), Loewe Foundation (Shanghai, 2024), National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne, 2023), Aurora Museum (Shanghai, 2023), Power Station of Art (Shanghai, 2022), Musée des Arts Décoratifs (Paris, 2021), CAFA Art Museum (Shenzhen, 2021), and West Bund Museum (Shanghai, 2021), among others. Recent solo exhibitions include It’s All About Her (Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art, St. Petersburg, Russia, 2025); The Power of Binding and Weaving (Samgaksan Geumam Museum of Art, Seoul, Korea, 2023); She’s Body (Art+ Shanghai Gallery, Shanghai), 2023; and Threads of Change (Art+ Shanghai Gallery, Shanghai, 2022).
In 2021, LIN was awarded the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize. In 2016, she received the Emerging Designer of the Year and Innovative Brand awards from the China Building Decoration Association. Her works are held in major public collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Nottingham City Museums and Galleries, Nottingham; Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art, St. Petersburg; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris; Samgaksan Geumam Museum of Art, Seoul, and Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning, Shenzhen.
